2K Games has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the development team at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the forthcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Management Shift Comes After Lukewarm Response
Brinkman steps into the role of studio head at 31st Union following the exit of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' lackluster initial reveal last autumn.
Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer updated staff about this organizational change through an internal memo, which highlighted that playtesting had shown the requirement for a clearer game identity.
The president noted that the developers is now overhauling the project with a renewed focus, aiming to satisfy player expectations.
A Pattern of Key Recruitment
The news mirrors a similar action taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to contribute to the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Below is the entire content from Ismailer's announcement:
Team—
I know you all just finished your gathering - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the positive developments. Previously I shared you all a update, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and talented creators we have had the chance to work with - and we’re eager for that relationship to persist.”
Given your hard work and versatility, particularly over the last year, you consistently demonstrate that.
The player input from last autumn’s the game playtest was enlightening. It validated the appeal of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had refinements needed. It revealed the requirement for a clearer vision.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve advanced. You took the feedback to consideration and overhauled Project ETHOS with a refreshed vision - one that’s poised to deliver on its potential to our audience.
The belief in this project increases every day. To advance the incredible progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome the new hire as the incoming Lead of 31st Union. Following several months of conversations, Ben comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.
Ben’s management and expertise in the competitive gaming space is extensive, having devoted the last 15 years creating and leading some of the most well-known series in the industry, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, Apex Legends.
Let’s together in greeting Ben in the coming days. We are all eager to keep seeing the development of Project ETHOS in the time to ahead.
David
