Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The ex-president was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he was staying under confinement pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after fresh information were revealed.

This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the detention, the judge said data from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a assembly of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on digital networks on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could "pray for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the potential of Bolsonaro's transfer to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a history of planning to ask for protection through a embassy office", a announcement said.

The legal document underscores that the United States embassy in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

Worldwide Consequences

His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative American leader Donald Trump, leading him to impose a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being held in a national police facility in the capital and will undergo a detention review on the next day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Top Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he needed regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of leading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the presidential race to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plan which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the backing of the military leaders. The current president was inaugurated without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed official structures in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The police intervened and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been incited by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the court case a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 national vote.
