Approximately 50 vehicles have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's city of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were vandalized, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Police say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored fluid.
The fluid had been drawn in the pattern of a banned symbol, they stated.
Police then discovered numerous other marked vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials state early analysis indicate the substance was likely human bodily fluid.
"Currently there is no clue as to its source; officials are currently not informed of any injuries in connection with the event," they added.
City officials announced they were working "to solve the incident" and have appealed to the public for information.
A high-ranking official said the vandalism left him speechless and had to be solved promptly.
"This act strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the far-right violent incident five years ago," he stated on online, referring to the killing of nine people by a gunman focusing on residents of migrant background in February 2020.
