In a first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” New York City, declaring “a different age” and an ambitious start to his administration.

An Unprecedented Figure

The 34-year-old figure, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.

The Fundamental Challenges of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their success in delivering essential functions: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and ensuring smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
